After more than a year of COVID, many parents and educators are seeking ways to incorporate health and wellness into their plans for the summer and upcoming school year.

SoFlo Health, a local weekly health and wellness show produced by WPLG-Local 10 (Miami’s ABC affiliate) shot a few segments with members of Common Threads’ Miami team, including Chef Instructor Mariano Mercado and Chef Instructor Mimi Chacin.

Chacin identified four healthy and family friendly Common Threads recipes that were suitable for the summer heat, including Veggie Topped Aussie Turkey Burgers, Watermelon & Feta Salad, Coconut Lime Yogurt Dip with Fruit and Strawberry Lemonade

She also showed viewers some grocery shopping tips at Publix’s West Miami location. Some of her favorite tips include making a thoughtful grocery list before visiting the store, shopping the perimeter of the store first, and purchasing canned, fresh and frozen foods when necessary to stretch your dollars and provide more flexibility in the kitchen.

Mercado, with the help of nephews Jay and Aiden and niece Audrey, led a physical activity session that was similar to what students do within Common Threads’ Cooking Skills & World Cuisine classes. Mercado shared the importance of incorporating physical activity into the day during the summer months, when children are not taking physical education classes in school, and encouraged families to find physical activities that they enjoyed.

Special thank you to the team at Publix and City of Miami Beach’s Parks & Recreation department for their support with filming these segments!

Tune in throughout the summer to SoFlo Health to see upcoming segments, Sundays at 12:30pm Eastern on Miami’s Local 10 (WPLG).
