Cooking Classes
The Common Threads after-school program teaches children ages 8 to 12 about nutrition, physical well-being and diversity through hands-on cooking classes. We are looking for people to volunteer with our children; helping them through the recipes each week, assist the Chef Instructor, and help with classroom activities. Volunteers are asked to attend the afternoon class once a week for the entire twelve-week session. The sessions take place twice a year. One session will be from January to May and a second session from September to December. We ask volunteers to arrive 15 minutes early and to help with clean up after class. Our classes are held after school beginning at 3:00, 3:30 or 4:00 and ending at 5:00, 5:30 or 6:00. Classes are held at nineteen locations around Chicago and in Los Angeles, Washington, DC and in Miami.
Summer Camp
Common Threads summer camp teaches children about nutrition, physical well-being and diversity through cooking classes, movement classes, garden time and classroom time focused on culture. Volunteers are needed to assist in the kitchen. Summer Camp 2010 will be from June 21- July 31.
World Garden
Experienced green-thumbs and inspired inexperienced gardeners alike are needed to help tend to our 1,000 square foot organic garden. The World Garden is located in Kenwood Park, near the intersection of 49th and Dorchester. Gardening classes are two hours and meet one day a week for six weeks in the fall and spring. Help is also needed planting and maintaining the garden throughout the year.
Special Events
Help is needed at periodic special events, such as the annual World Festival event. Location, time and duties vary by event.
Field Trips
Volunteers are needed to assist in field trip classes. Field trips bring two groups of children, from different neighborhoods, together to prepare a special meal.
Office
Help Common Threads with all the “behind the scenes” operations necessary to run the organization. Assist the Common Threads staff with database organization and general office tasks.
Volunteers’ skills are always needed such as, graphic design, translation or IT consultation.
